If you are a school principal in the US, or someone who supports school principals in the US, what are you worrying about as you close out this unprecedented school year and prepare for the next? Who could have imagined the turbulence we have experienced in 2020? We can now be certain: We live in an uncertain world!
School principals will deal with the fallout from multiple disruptions and disasters as they re-convene schools. They face questions that have never been asked before. How will they respond? Structured plans, milestones, and predictable outcomes will not be possible. Instead of answers, they need better questions. Human systems dynamics (HSD) offers a path for exploring their most wicked issues using powerful questions.
Human Systems Dynamics Institute and Coplexity are proud to introduce the Complexity Academy: Educational Leadership for the Age of Uncertainty. For 20 minutes, twice each week through the month of August, principals will use a structured inquiry process with peers to solve real issues and to build their adaptive capacity. Upon completion of this Academy, participants will receive a certificate naming them as a Complexity Academy Fellow. For more about the Complexity Academy, view this brief video.
If you support principals, we invite you to nominate your most innovative, energetic principals who have the courage and capacity to step into the unknown future. If you are a principal, we invite you to share this with your supervisor and then nominate yourself.
What’s the catch? There is no catch. The Academy is financed by a grant from the Langeloth Foundation, so we can offer this learning opportunity for 100 principals across the country at no cost to the district or to the principals. This may prove to be the most productive 5 hours and 20 minutes of a principal’s career!

Faculty & Coaches
Dr. Glenda Eoyang works with public and private organizations to help them thrive in the face of overwhelming complexity and uncertainty. She is a pioneer in the field of human systems dynamics (HSD), which she founded. Through Human Systems Dynamic Institute, Glenda uses her Models and Methods to help others see patterns in the chaos that surrounds them, understand the patterns in simple and powerful ways, and take practical steps to shift chaos into order. Her clients include Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Oxfam International, Canada School of Public Service, Cargill, Fraser Health Authority (BC), and Roche/Genentech.
Glenda’s latest book, with co-author Royce Holladay, is Adaptive Action: Leveraging Uncertainty in Your Organization (Stanford University Press, April 2013).
Cheryl Green has a background in education and has served as a teacher, principal and district leader in multiple school districts. Her most fulfilling work came while living in the Mississippi Delta and working in a variety of roles in education. During that time, she helped to co-create the REACH (Revitalizing Educational Awareness of Change) Institute that helped students in the region to access college and universities across the country.
Cheryl has taken on multiple roles with New Leaders, Inc., including training school principals and leading leadership effectiveness work. As Senior Consultant/Managing Director with Insight Education Group, she helped with teacher and leadership effectiveness projects with the Tennessee Department of Education, Syracuse City Schools, Baltimore Public Schools, Shelby County Schools and UNO Charter Network in Chicago, to name a few. Since 2015, Cheryl has been helping organizations with program planning and implementation, meeting and session facilitation. Overall, her work is driven by helping organizations create systemic change, resolve conflict, help teams work more efficiently and move projects from strategy to action.
Royce Holladay has been working to support people as they navigate change for over 30 years. With a Masters degree in counseling, she began learning about the dynamics of personal change and has been using those skills in multiple areas of her work and personal life since that time. She has worked with individuals of all ages, supporting them to find their own path through the challenges of their complex lives. Over the past decade, Royce has co-authored five books based on Human Systems Dynamics. Her most recent books are a series of brief guides designed to help people apply HSD principles to specific areas of work in human systems. Examples include coaching, instructional design, and facilitation.
