In today’s landscape, you often deal with forces you can’t see or control. Still, you need to prepare for that future, planning for a complex world. Day-to-day, simple planning for “getting stuff done” is not generally a problem. The difficulty in planning emerges when you face the task of plotting your future in complex and uncertain challenges.

In those times, you can’t know what you don’t know. You can’t predict because so many factors shape the speed and path of moving forward. Every decision, every move requires you to see what’s going on in this moment, make sense of what you see, and take a next step toward your goal. That’s the best you can do. Each step along the path, you respond to uncertainty and turbulence. Traditional planning just doesn’t work.

So what can you do in those times? In HSD we offer a framework that 1) Describes the challenge you face; 2) Points you in a clear, shared direction; 3) Provides guidance and “curbs” for decisions along the way; and 4) Identifies the markers and measures you’ll look for as you take action.

This Adaptive Action Lab will walk you through the steps of developing this plan for strategic adaptive actions. You will use your own personal or professional challenge to build a strategic framework for moving toward your goals.

This lab is one in a series of six. To register for the series, click here.
