Following is information about the 2008 HSDG (Human Systems Dynamics Group) led by Kristine Quade, Royce Holladay and Mary Nations, regarding the upcoming session in September. Please consider joining them for this incredible weekend!
Human System Dynamics Group:
What the Bleep Do We Know About
Self-Organizing in Groups?
THE NEW OFFERING
We are at the edge of new learning! Pioneering new theory now lies at the intersection of the sciences (complexity theory, complex adaptive systems, mathematics, life sciences, biology) and behavioral sciences (Organization Development, change management, psychology, anthropology, social science, cognitive sciences, social networks). This intersection is known as Human Systems Dynamics, and is a different way of viewing self-organizing structures that demand different relationships within groups.
Combining unique metaphors, methods, tools, and models, this experiential lab will help leaders, change agents, and management consultants understand, work with, and lead through rather than react to the chaos that we experience on a daily basis.
You are invited to participate in a Human Systems Dynamics Group (HSDG) that will give you a more flexible, adaptable, and coherent approach to working at a systems level by identifying:
· attracting patterns that are easy to spot once we know what they look like;
· subtle influencing approaches which are easily learned and taught to others;
· adaptive approaches which are influential and lasting;
· critical points of interception that can change trajectory rather than relying on control mechanisms for control in your organization, group or with individual direction.
WHAT OTHERS HAVE SAID
'In the emerging field of self-organizing systems, there is no better way to learn but to see it first hand and to experience the self-organization process. It was truly an exceptional few days and added more to my knowledge of self-organizing systems than anything else I've experienced.'
-Don Gilman
'Understanding group dynamics is the basis of effective leadership, team building, and organizational development. This workshop gave me deep insight into what drives groups and what constrains them. I had ideas about how groups work, and this was a place to check out those ideas. Working with the other attendees, I experienced an intimate learning environment. '
- Mindy Meyer
'I have been a student of complexity and emergent nonlinear dynamics for several years and knew of Human Systems Dynamics (HSD) but had not seen it in practice. Consequently, I welcomed the opportunity to attend a workshop which exposed me to the workings of one of the HSD Institute's central models, the Container-Difference-Exchange (CDE) model. The workshop was excellent. The CDE model is a highly workable tool for OD practitioners and others engaged in organizational change. It not only provides a clear depiction of group behaviors but explains them and shows how behaviors can be influenced and changes produced from within the groups themselves. This is an extraordinarily valuable tool both well grounded in theory and highly useful in practice.'
- Michael McElwee, Ph.D, M.B.A.
'I count it as one of the most significant learning experiences I have had in my lifetime. I can guarantee that you will leave with a deeper understanding of yourself and others through a dynamic group interaction process. You get to deepen your thinking about complex adaptive systems and self organizing systems. If you have been wondering if you should attend, I would highly suggest it. I can't say enough about the learning and the facilitators. It was TERRIFIC!!!!'

September 25, 2008 beginning at 1:00pm through
September 28, 2008 finishing at 1:00pm
(Thurs – Sun)
YOU WILL LEARN TO:
Understand group dynamics as a representation of a complex adaptive system.
- Understand the Landscape Diagram, based on the work of Ralph Stacy, as a means of determining the evolution of patterns.
- Learn to use the Eoyang CDE Model as a multi-dimensional influencing tool for shifting the self-organizing process.
- Learn and practice Percept concepts and language, as developed by John and Joyce Weir, in order to understand the function and power of individual feedback loops.
- Identify patterns that emerge during self-organizing that bind or release the creative process.
- Learn to create transcendent simple rules that act as conscious guideposts for adaptive action.
Other helpful models and tools may be introduced as the group members co-create their learning goals.
THIS SESSION IS FOR YOU:
· If you are an early adopter of cutting edge theory and practice
· If you search for innovative ways of understanding and influencing group dynamics
· If you want to place yourself in creative learning tension with all that you have learned and practiced before.
· If you lead others or have a consulting practice and long for a simpler, more robust means of practice.
· If you influence peers, colleagues, leaders, followers or your community
· If you want to learn more about applications using complexity and chaos theory
A SHORT MESSAGE FROM US:
With globalization, we have experienced more discontinuity in the world and organizations are longing for skills that keep them fleet of foot, adaptable, and flexible. It is apparent that the approach to organizational and group dynamics needs to be more robust. We found multiple solutions in Human Systems Dynamics as an intersection between hard science and behavioral science which has provided us with a new understanding and language for what is happening in human-guided systems. We continue to be amazed at the applicability and power of this new theory and practice. Our goal is to help others to be powerful influencers within their system.
