Team Building the HSD Way
What do you think of when people talk about “team building”? If your mind goes to simulated games and exercises to build trust, you are not alone. But the truth is that those kinds of activities, while engaging and interesting, don’t help you shift the dynamics of the team in the long run.
What if there was a way we could see, understand, and truly influence the patterns of interaction among individuals to bring about more cohesive, productive teams? What if there was a way that you could help to shape the dynamics of your team? There is a way, and it’s called Human Systems Dynamics.
Don't Just Survive--THRIVE!

The turbulent times we live in demand innovation and action. People who take adaptive action can thrive in times of uncertainty. When you understand the complex dynamics of chaotic change, you do more than merely survive. You grasp opportunities to thrive in uncertainty while others waste resources fighting for control and stability. Join us for two, one-hour webinars that will introduce you to the powerful world of human systems dynamics, where concepts from nature inform action in organizations. Using practical examples and real-world stories, you will:
- Recognize turbulent change for what it is—emergent opportunity
- Learn about adaptive action and assess your own capacity for it
- Identify actions you can take to thrive, to respond to even your most difficult issues
- Explore resources to support your continuing learning and development
Virtual Open House: Celebrating Uncertainty
Glenda Eoyang, Executive Director of HSD Institute, shared the vision of the Institute as it looks toward the new year of 2010. She opens a discussion titled Looking Ahead: What Do You Know for Sure? Six Questions for Uncertain Times. In this conversation, Glenda shared a series of questions that can guide our thinking as we face the uncertainties of the future – in the US and global economy, political climate, our organizations, community, and home life.
During this online discussion, participants were encouraged to engage with the entire group, using their computer keyboard and/or a USB headset. You will hear the conversation and view messages posted on the message board.
We invite all who are interested in HSD and its applications in today's challenging and diverse landscape to experience this webinar for an informative and interesting discussion. Over the course of the Open House, the presentation was made three times, allowing participants to come and go throughout, joining the discussion when they wanted and leaving when they chose. With guests joining in at different times, all three conversations are rich, diverse, and engaging.
Once you experience this webinar, you will go away with perspectives that can change how we approach work and life in this decade.

If you answer yes to any of the questions below, please read on and join this unique on-line program.
- Are you frustrated with the speed and unpredictability of change?
- Do you have difficulty explaining your reliable intuitions about what should be done and how to do it?
- Are you curious about the ideas of chaos and complexity connected to business, and want to see how those ideas can make a real difference in decision making and action?
The foundation of Human Systems Dynamics assumes:
- Fitness is the foundation of success.
- Dialogue is only the beginning. Meaningful change depends on action.
- Individual transformation is not enough. Real change engages the whole - your team, organization, or community.
- Possibilities for the future are locked into the patterns of today's reality.
- An answer has a short shelf life, but a good question can serve forever.
Do these assumptions shock or confirm your own beliefs about organizational change and performance? If they shock you, then get ready for a new, more productive, way to see the world. If they confirm your beliefs, then you can build on success as you articulate, share, and expand your understanding of complex human systems.
A deeper understanding of human systems dynamics will change how you perceive and take effective action to improve performance.
During this seven-part series, you will:
- Approach human performance in new and more productive ways.
- Learn tricks to help you manage projects in unpredictable situations.
- Manage performance when you cannot predict or control objectives and outcomes.
- Make and implement plans that help you balance stability and surprise.
- Design communication systems that leverage the inherent capacity of your community.
- Prepare yourself and your staff for the future with strategies that build adaptive capacity.
- Leverage virtual communications to improve both process and outcomes.
- Establish relationships in a network of shared inquiry around the world.
This workshop is a must for professionals in the public and private sectors, higher education and government. Take a look at our webinar series Strategy to Action: the Power of HSD. These seven sessions continue the learning about thinking and working differently with individuals, teams, organizations, and communities.

Change is changing. Words like resilience, adaptation, emergence, and transformation are liberally sprinkled throughout the latest theories and tools for change. But, what do these words mean? How can you see and influence the complex patterns that shape the future for individuals, teams, organizations, and communities today? How can you increase performance in systems where:
- change is constant?
- relationships are complicated?
- communications are virtual?
In this complex and fast-moving world, there is no one solution that’s good enough. What works one day in one situation may be worse than nothing at another time and place. To find the “fix that fits,” you need to understand what drives change. You need to have tools and techniques that help you generate options for action and pick the one that has the best chance of success right now. You need a theory base that helps you learn from the past to take action in the present that will inform the future you desire. You need human systems dynamics.
Join Glenda Eoyang and the HSD Institute in our latest webinar series “Finding the Fix that Fits: Human Systems Dynamics at Work”. Find the fix that fits when you:
- Recognize when and why your old tools fail
- Name the patterns that shape complex change for you and your team
- Assess your situation and explore out-of-the-box options for action
- Develop a theory of change that embraces familiar tools while suggesting radical innovations
These six sessions form a foundation for thinking and working differently with individuals, teams, organizations, and communities.
