One goal of the HSD Institute is to publish high quality, informative materials that advance the field of human systems dynamics. We publish manuscripts electronically through PATTERNS and maintain documents for reference in the on-line resources department. We also work with authors to co-publish book-length manuscripts that fit the aims and quality expectations of Associates. We encourage Associates to submit manuscripts for review and publication. The submission and review process is relatively simple.
We recognize the authors' concerns about making their works public. The HSD Institute's Intellectual Property statement outlines our practices and expectations for how Associates will show respect for the work of others. Before you submit a manuscript to us, please read and consider the policy carefully.
When you are ready to submit your manuscript for publication, follow these instructions.
- For submissions of articles and white papers in .pdf format, go to the submission form and follow the instructions. Within minutes your document will be uploaded. Within 24 hours, it will be previewed and published.
- Book-length manuscripts should be submitted in hard
copy, accompanied by a disk. Carefully follow the formatting guidelines
outlined in the procedure. Manuscripts that do not follow appropriate
guidelines will not be reviewed. You will receive a confirmation after
the manuscript is received. These manuscripts should be mailed to Royce
Holladay, 826 44th Ave. North, Minneapolis, Minnesota 55412.

Submission and Review Procedure
Manuscripts must be double-spaced, 12-point font, with one-inch margins. Use an easily read font, such as Arial, Bookman, Times Roman, or other similar font. Please use either Microsoft Word or WordPerfect. The submission form will be kept as your statement verifying authorship and right to submit the document.
INFORMAL MATERIALS submitted either directly into the site, or received by HSD Institute staff will receive a basic review and then will be published on the web site.
FORMAL MATERIALS that are less than book length will be reviewed upon submission and placed on the website within 24 hours. They will be placed in relevant categories, and documents that are submitted as responses to a particular work will be noted and attached through a hyperlink.
BOOK-LENGTH manuscripts are carefully reviewed to assure accuracy and usefulness. After a manuscript is submitted, the Director of the Network will forward the manuscript to other HSD Institute staff for a first-level review. Upon approval at that level, the manuscript will be sent to the Science Advisory Board for their review and acceptance. Finally the accepted manuscript will be sent to a substantive editor, who will work with the author to move the manuscript toward publication and inclusion in the publishing schedule.
Please note that manuscripts will not be returned. They will be kept in an electronic file for 6 months after publication then will be destroyed. Hard copies that are used in the review process will be shredded upon completion of the review.
Intellectual Property Statement
- The HSD Institute exists to support the development of theory and practice in human systems dynamics. Development of the field depends on members' ability to share information easily while sustaining the value of personal and institutional investment required to generate and express innovative ideas. This Intellectual Property Policy is designed to establish conditions that meet both of these needs for members and for the HSD Institute.
- Materials distributed through on-line conversations, voice or face-to-face conversations, email, or attached word processing or text documents will be considered INFORMAL communications. Contents of such documents will be considered the property of the writer. Out of respect for each other and expectation that value will be given for value, members will be expected to acknowledge sources for ideas that appear in informal documents.
- Materials that are distributed in .pdf format will be considered FORMAL communications. They will be owned by the author and should be cited formally in any reuse by other members or by the HSD Institute itself.
- Materials that are published by the HSD Institute, including books, journal articles, newsletter articles, white papers, will be considered PUBLISHED materials. The authors will retain copyright for the published materials, and the HSD Institute will have license to extract from or reproduce them in any variation throughout the life of the HSD Institute.
- All Associates and staff of the HSD Institute are accountable to conform to this policy and to enforce it in all their interactions.
- Intellectual property disagreements that arise between Associates of the HSD Institute or between an Associate and the HSD Institute will be resolved through standard processes of mediation.
